My day almost always starts with a workout that’s followed by a nourishing smoothie. The smoothie I’m sharing today is made with super clean ingredients for those of us needing a kick start. I’ve complained about juice bar smoothies in the past. The ones that look healthy at first, but are actually mostly ice cream. Recently I’ve noticed healthier smoothie options popping up at juice bars like Whole Foods and even our local shop, Blenders.

There are many ways one could make a “detox smoothie” but this version is essentially a copycat of one I like at Blenders, The Cleanse, which was developed by local Registered Dietitian Jennifer Tasca.
Detox Smoothie Ingredients
While I always hesitate to name recipes with health benefits in the title, I truly believe in Hippocrates’ quote, “let food be thy medicine.” I never make any health promises or claims here (read my full disclaimer here), but I love to share when I learn about the different ways in which specific foods can promote better physical and mental health. I know how much better I feel when I’m moving my body often and good about a clean whole foods diet, and I love sharing that with others. We are all exposed to so many pollutants and chemicals through the environment, processed foods, and even cosmetics that adding more liver-supporting foods is a good idea. Okay, here’s what we’ve got going on in this smoothie.
- Coconut water: Full of natural electrolytes (skip the florescent sports drinks, guys).
- Parsley: Supports the body’s detoxification process.
- Lemon: Citrus fruits can help the liver produce detoxifying enzymes.
- Apple: Contains pectin, which helps the body cleanse.
- Ginger: Anti-inflammatory.
- Cucumber: Cucurbitacins (compounds found in cucumbers) can support the digestive tract and liver.
- Spinach: Leafy greens are high in chlorophyll, which can neutralize heavy metals.
- Protein powder: Choose a clean pea protein sweetened with stevia. Garden of Life Raw Organic Vanilla protein is my go-to and linked in the recipe).
- Cinnamon: regulates blood sugar, which is why I always add it to my coffee.
How to Make Your Detox Smoothie
Making your smoothie is easy. Simply add liquid to the bottom to get started. I like to use the minimum amount of liquid needed to turn the blade, as you can always add more. Top with the remaining ingredients and blend!

- ¼ cup coconut water (unsweetened)
- 1 1/2 cups baby spinach
- 1/3 cup fresh parsley leaves
- 1/2 Persian cucumber
- 2 teaspoons fresh grated ginger
- squeeze of lemon
- 1/2 apple
- 1 cup frozen peaches
- 1/2 cup frozen banana slices
- 1 scoop vanilla pea protein powder*
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup ice
- Pour the coconut water into the blender.
- Top with the remaining ingredients.
- Place the lid on top, with tamper inserted if you have one and turn on. Blend until smooth and there are no remaining green pieces. Add more liquid if needed to turn the blade. Add more ice to thicken and chill.
- Enjoy immediately!
