Chocolate Protein Smoothie Bowl
I know I should be posting holiday recipes, but I just got home from a great workout and had this recovery protein smoothie bowl that was so delicious I just had to share it with you right away. It tastes just like a chocolate milkshake but is filled with superfood goodness instead of sugar.
I used to have a major sweet tooth and could never imaging not craving chocolate. Now that I take better are of myself by avoiding sugar and sticking to a high protein plant based diet I don’t have sugar cravings at all. Part of the road to success in cutting out sugar for me was replacing sugar with nutritious treats like this one when I did want a sweet treat.
Spirulina, raw cacao powder, and hemp seeds just a few of my favorite superfood smoothie additions. They all add vegan protein an myriad health benefits.
Don’t you just want to dig into this bowl with a big spoon?! It tastes so decadent. I love adding a satisfying crunch with pomegranate and seeds on top.
Total time: 5 minutes
Yield: 1 serving
- 1/2 cup almond milk
- 1 peeled and sliced frozen banana
- 1 tablespoon natural peanut or almond butter
- 1 tablespoon cacao powder
- 1/2 teaspoon spirulina
- 1-2 scoops protein powder (I recommend either Tera’s Whey Organic Vanilla or Vega)
- small handful ice
- 1 teaspoon hemp seeds
- 1 tablespoon pomegranate arils
- Place all ingredients through ice in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth.
- Top with hemp and pomegranate.
Proteins I use:
Both of these taste great, are high in protein, and are sweetened with stevia. These don’t have added vitamins, so they are family friendly. Vega is a vegan protein that’s non-GMO, soy-free, and is made with pea, hemp, and other plant proteins. I think their “recover”and “protein smoothie” varieties taste best.
