Carmel Valley Ranch Review: Is It Worth It for Families?
After three family stays at Carmel Valley Ranch, I’m sharing what makes this luxury Carmel resort so special, along with its suites, pools, animals, activities, dining, and what families should know before booking.

Carmel Valley Ranch has been one of our favorite California family getaways since our first visit when our daughters were very young. We’ve now stayed at the resort three times, returning for its spacious suites, beautiful setting, family activities, and relaxed atmosphere.
Set on 500 acres in Carmel Valley, the property feels like a luxury resort, working ranch, summer camp, and nature retreat all in one. Plenty for children to do, but the suites, spa, golf course, restaurants, and adult pool make it just as appealing to adults.
This review was originally published after our first stay and has been updated with experiences and photos from subsequent visits. Activities and amenities can change, so check the current resort schedule before you plan your trip.
Carmel Valley Ranch at a Glance
Carmel Valley Ranch is a 500-acre luxury resort in Carmel Valley, about 20 minutes from Carmel-by-the-Sea and Monterey. Although it has all the amenities you would expect from a high-end resort, the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming to families.
The property is large and hilly, with suites, restaurants, pools, gardens, vineyards, walking trails, a golf course, a spa, and areas where many of the Ranch’s animals live. It’s the kind of place where you can plan a full weekend without leaving the property.
You can check current rates and availability at Carmel Valley Ranch here.
Suites at Carmel Valley Ranch
One of the biggest advantages for families is the amount of space. Rather than feeling like standard hotel rooms, the accommodations are suites with room to spread out. Separate sleeping and living areas were especially helpful when our girls were young because we didn’t all have to go to bed at the same time.
Depending on the suite category, accommodations may include fireplaces, balconies or patios, soaking tubs, and views of the surrounding hills. On our more recent visit, the suite still felt comfortable and private, with the quiet, residential feeling that makes the Ranch so relaxing.
The resort is spread across a large property, so check your suite’s location if being close to a particular pool, restaurant, or activity area matters to you.
Is Carmel Valley Ranch Good for Kids?
Carmel Valley Ranch is one of the most family-friendly luxury resorts we’ve visited. Children are welcome throughout the property, and there is enough open space that parents don’t have to worry about every bit of noise or movement.
On our first visit, Roxy, the resident English Bulldog, greeted us and was very accustomed to attention from young guests. Roxy is no longer at the Ranch, but the memory of the girls meeting her remains one of my favorite photos from that trip.
The girls also loved the many swings hanging from the Ranch’s beautiful oak trees. These simple moments—swinging, looking for animals, walking through the gardens, and exploring the property—were just as memorable as the organized activities.
Activities and schedules change throughout the year, so I recommend checking what’s available during your stay and reserving popular experiences in advance.
Animals and Wildlife at the Ranch
Wildlife is part of everyday life at Carmel Valley Ranch. We regularly saw deer and wild turkeys wandering around the property, including a doe with her tiny fawn.
The Ranch is also home to a variety of farm animals. On a more recent visit, we met the Scottish Highland cows, with their shaggy coats and long horns. If you love them as much as I do, you can read more about Scottish Highland cows here.
Guests may also encounter goats, alpacas, chickens, and other animals, although the residents and opportunities to visit them can change. If meeting the animals matters to your family, check the current activities calendar.
Beekeeping, Lavender, and the Organic Garden
The beekeeping experience was a highlight of our first stay. Wearing full protective suits, we learned about the hives, watched the bees at work, and came away with a much greater appreciation for how important they are.
The Ranch’s gardens and lavender fields are another special part of the property. During our visits, we walked among rows of lavender, herbs, vegetables, and flowers. The Ranch incorporates ingredients grown on-site into its food and other products.
These experiences gave the trip a sense of place we wouldn’t have gotten from a conventional hotel. The girls weren’t simply being entertained; they were learning about bees, gardening, animals, and the natural world around them.
Pools and Water Play
When our daughters were young, we spent hours at the family pool. At the time of our visit, there was a very shallow children’s pool and splash area that worked well for our younger non-swimmer. I could sit nearby while the girls played, which made the afternoon surprisingly relaxing for me, too.
The Ranch also has a quieter adult pool, though I didn’t get to experience it during that particular family trip. Pool configurations, access, and hours can change, so confirm the current details with the resort before visiting.
Evening S’mores
Evenings at Carmel Valley Ranch often ended around the fire with s’mores. The children certainly enjoyed them, but the adults looked forward to the tradition just as much.
There was something especially nice about slowing down at the end of the day, gathering around the fire, and roasting marshmallows under the trees. It’s a small detail, but it captures what we enjoy about the Ranch: the luxury is there, but the most memorable experiences are often simple ones.
Dining at Carmel Valley Ranch
The convenience of eating on the property made our family trips much easier. We could spend the day swimming or exploring without getting everyone dressed and into the car for every meal.
Menus and dining concepts have changed since our earliest visits, so check the current restaurant options and hours before your stay. Reservations are a good idea for dinner, especially on weekends and during busy travel periods.
Visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium
Although it would be easy to remain at the Ranch for an entire weekend, the location also makes it a good home base for exploring Carmel and Monterey.
On one of our trips, we drove to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, about 20 minutes from the resort without heavy traffic. Our girls loved the sea stars, jellyfish, seahorses, and other marine life. It remains one of the best family activities in the area.
Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel Beach, Point Lobos, Pebble Beach, and the Earthbound Farm Stand are also within driving distance.
What to Know Before Booking
- The resort covers 500 acres and is hilly, so your suite’s location can make a difference.
- Many experiences are seasonal or scheduled only on certain days.
- Reserve popular activities, dining, and spa appointments in advance.
- Carmel Valley is often sunnier and warmer than the coast, but mornings and evenings can still be cool.
- A car is helpful if you plan to explore Carmel-by-the-Sea or Monterey.
- Confirm current pool details and children’s programming directly with the resort, as these may have changed since our visits.
Is Carmel Valley Ranch Worth It?
For families who want spacious accommodations, beautiful surroundings, and plenty to do without constantly getting in the car, Carmel Valley Ranch is worth considering. It is particularly well suited to a long weekend, multigenerational trip, or family vacation that combines outdoor activities with the comforts of a luxury resort.
After three stays, what stands out most isn’t one particular amenity. It’s the experience of seeing deer outside, swinging beneath the oak trees, learning about bees, roasting s’mores, and having time to enjoy being together.

How fun! I love Monterey and can't wait to visit again soon. We haven't been since our first was born 10 years ago. I'll have to check out the ranch, the boys would love it.

what fun! Oh it sounds great and beautiful and that quote about the mom is sooo true! Going to target by myself on the weekends while hubby watches the kids is my idea of a good time:)
I adore this place. My husband and I have stayed there a few times (sans the kids) and it's such a great getaway. My in-laws rent a beach house in Monterey every March so we head on down most every weekend. I love Carmel! The coastline is magnificent and the cypress trees are magical.
Congrats on the book progress. I can't wait to see the final product!
Beautiful pics!!
I want to be there and see all those great things!! Can't wait for recipe 😀
I love this Marina!! Sounds like exactly the kind of resort that we would love.
Couldn't agree more with that funny graphic you posted & this “watching kids who can't swim at a pool is just anxiety inducing.” VERY.
When school ended this year I had my 5 year old in daily swim classes until he could get across the pool. I a am quite a bit less fearful ~ but still watch him closely (of course!)
I too prefer active travel with nature / luxury hotel settings.
Congrats on your book! I can't wait to see it! xo
What a wonderful weekend! Carmel is so absolutely breath-taking. Gorgeous photo of your little one at the end. {I cannot wait for that pie recipe! Looks delicious!}
What a wonderful getaway! That's so cute how your girls are so tickled by the English bulldog:) Can't wait for the future posts you mentioned. Congrats on the progress of your book!
I hope you share your recipes for the pie and also the upcoming whole peach pie soon because my birthday and my son's birthday are THIS weekend and I'm looking for something different. Any ideas on a healthy alternative to a heavy sugar birthday cake?
Hi Krista!
The pies are up now!
How about a build-you-own frozen yogurt bar. Set out ice cream cones, healthier ice cream/froyo on ice, and various sprinkles?
Happy birthday to your little boy!
Looks wonderful:)
Oh my gosh! The 1st picture of Bella swinging is so Idyllic, you just transport me with your photos. Actually all the pictures are wonderful and I love that you really had a chance to enjoy the beauty of Carmel and relax with your little ladies. You deserve it. XOXO
There's that last picture that I LOVE so much!! Seriously incredible.
This looks like an incredible weekend. And I am so with you on the car rides with toddler and watching them at the pool…you sound just like me!
We're in West Palm Beach for the month.
