We love that the Sleepy Girl Mocktail has become so popular on social media! Magnesium mocktails were recommended to me by a naturopathic doctor years before the viral version was posted to TikTok. My doctor sent me home with a tub of powdered magnesium and prescribed this mocktail to combat stress and promote hormone balance and relaxation.

The combination of tart cherry juice, magnesium powder, sparkling water, and a squeeze of fresh lime juice comes together to make the best Sleepy Girl Mocktail recipe.

Sleepy Girl Mocktail Ingredients

A bottle of tart cherry juice, can of Poppi soda, tub of magnesium powder, and fresh limes sit on a wooden board outside. Prebiotic Soda or Sparkling Water

This relaxation mocktail starts with a bubbly base of Poppi prebiotic soda. However, we find this too sweet when using a flavored Magnesium supplement and prefer to use sparkling water such as Spindrift.

Tart Cherry Juice

Renowned for its natural richness in tryptophan, an essential amino acid, tart cherry juice contributes to the production of serotonin and melatonin – neurotransmitters that play a crucial role in regulating sleep patterns.

Be sure to choose a natural, unsweetened tart cherry juice. You can find it at Trader Joe’s and most other grocery stores. Studies have shown tart cherry juice may help improve insomnia, decrease inflammation, and increase tryptophan availability.

Magnesium Powder

Magnesium, a vital mineral for overall well-being, plays a key role in relaxing muscles and promoting a sense of calm. By incorporating magnesium into this tart cherry juice mocktail, you not only enhance its nutritional profile but also provide your body with a soothing element that contributes to a peaceful night’s sleep.

Type of Magnesium to Use for Sleep

A hand pours a scoop of light pink magnesium powder into a wine glass filled with ice and sparkling Poppi prebiotic soda to make a magnesium drink.

Shopping for magnesium supplements can be confusing, as there are several types available. I get my Magnesium powder from a naturopathic doctor in Santa Barbara, but it’s also available on Amazon. MoonJuice has a similar popular product called Magnesi-Om which works well for a Sleepy Girl Mocktail.

RelaxMax (the Magnesium powder I use), and Magnesi-Om both contain other relaxation-promoting supplements including L-Theanine. RelaxMax also includes GABA. GABA, or gamma-aminobutyric acid, functions as a neurotransmitter in the brain and helps reduce stress.

  • Magnesium Gluconate and Malate:
    • Support exercise by aiding in muscle relaxation.
  • Magnesium Citrate:
    • Promotes detoxification by supporting digestive health.
  • Magnesium Acetyl Taurinate:
    • Fosters brain health by enhancing cognitive function.
  • Magnesium Bisglycinate:
    • Facilitates a restful night’s sleep by aiding the body’s stress response.

Does the Sleepy Girl Mocktail Work?

While individual responses may vary, the Sleepy Girl Mocktail has garnered positive reviews for its relaxation-inducing qualities. The combination of carefully selected ingredients, including magnesium powder (especially one containing L-Theanine and GABA powders), and tart cherry juice, has been reported by many to contribute to a calming and soothing effect, making it a promising option for those seeking a natural way to unwind and promote a restful night’s sleep.

When to Drink

A relaxing mocktail such as this one is perfect for enjoying anywhere from around 5 pm until bedtime. I like to make one to have instead of a glass of wine. Drinking tart cherry juice one hour before bed is also frequently recommended by sleep experts.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Fill a wine glass with ice.
  2. Fill 2/3 of the glass with sparkling water.
  3. Add one serving of magnesium powder and stir to combine.
  4. Top with tart cherry juice and a squeeze of fresh lime juice.

Notes

We love Poppi prebiotic soda but find it too sweet when used in combination with flavored/sweetened magnesium powder. For sweet powders such as RelaxMax cherry flavor, use plain sparkling water. For unflavored, Poppi is tasty.

Be sure to choose a magnesium powder that supports relaxation. RelaxMax and Magnesi-Om are two we recommend as they also include L-Theanine and/or GABA. See the links to these supplements below.
