The positive reviews continue to roll in on some of our wellness drinks like our Ginger Shots, Apple Cider Vinegar Drink, Detox Water, Detox Beet Juice, and Detox Smoothie. So I wanted to share another favorite wellness shot recipe – these simple orange Turmeric Shots.

Turmeric wellness shots are great anytime you would like a natural anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, or vitamin-C boost. I love these as a recovery aid after tough workouts or long runs.

What are wellness shots?

Wellness shots are tiny yet potent juices uses for medicinal purposes. They are often found in the juice or refrigerated cold remedy sections of many grocery stores. Though they are easy to find in stores, making your own wellness shots is easy, less expensive, and results in less plastic waste.

Turmeric Shot Benefits

Turmeric, which is in the same family as ginger, has been used in cooking, and medicinally for thousands of years. Most of its health benefits stem from a component called curcumin, which is high in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin is thought to aid in the “management of oxidative and inflammatory conditions, metabolic syndrome, arthritis, anxiety, and more (1).” Dr. Greger even includes a daily dose of turmeric in his recommended Daily Dozen.

For the best curcumin bioavailability, turmeric should be consumed along with piperine, the main active component in black pepper. So have a piece of Avocado Toast with black pepper alongside your golden latte, or be sure to add a dash to your turmeric shots.

How to Take Turmeric

There are several ways to take turmeric. Though capsules of ground turmeric are available, I prefer to either use the ground spice in golden teas, cooking, or fresh in juices, smoothies, or wellness shots.

Simple Turmeric Shot Recipe

You only need a few ingredients to make turmeric shots at home. You’ll need a fresh piece of turmeric, black pepper, and an orange or two. If you’d prefer not to use orange, you could use lemon or even coconut water. However, I personally like the flavor best with fresh orange.

To make your turmeric shots, peel the turmeric with a vegetable peeler and remove the orange skin and pith with a paring knife.

Pop the turmeric and orange into your juicer and you’re in business. If you don’t have a juicer, you can peel, and chop the turmeric, then blend in a blender, though you may need a bit more liquid when using this method.
