15 Veggie Burger Recipes

With Father's Day coming up, I wanted to share 15 mouthwatering veggie burger recipes. After all, burgers are quintessential "dude food" and essential summer fare. A few of these veggie burgers are from my blog, and the rest are shared with permission from my blogger friends. These are no sissy veggie burgers, these hearty sandwiches are "meaty" enough for any carnivore.

There's nothing quite as satisfying as a big juicy burger. My requirements are as follows: warm bun, hearty patty, lots of fresh toppings with something crunchy, and tangy condiments. There are many ways to make a veggie burger. Before I moved to a more plant-based way of cooking and eating I was taught that veggie burgers were low in protein and made of unhealthy, processed ingredients. I also thought that the only way veggie burgers were made was with processed soy. When I delved deeper into the world of veggie burgers, I found I was so wrong. As you'll see with the veggie burgers below, many veggie burgers are made with nourishing, wholesome, hearty ingredients like beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, quinoa and vegetables. Those are some of my favorite ingredients and they can make some seriously delicious burgers! When you treat Dad (or yourself!) to one of these veggie burgers, you can know you're doing something that's better for our bodies, animals, and the earth. And dare I say... even more delicious.

vegetarian or vegan tempeh veggie burgers with BBQ sauce
These are the only soy based burgers in this round-up. We've talked about tempeh before. It's a hearty patty made from fermented soybeans. Tempeh is high in protein, but less processed than tofu. Tempeh has been enjoyed throughout Asia, and especially Indonesia, for centuries. In these burgers it's coated in BBQ sauce and then grilled. You can also use baked tempeh strips. I think I would prefer that even more now that I think about it! 

Hey, that's me! This recipe appeared in Cooking Light in 2010 and a version of it in pita bread is in my cookbook. It was one of the first recipes I developed and I still love it! The mango avocado salsa is perfect for summer. 

These bright pink burgers are a copycat of a burger I loved at Eureka Burger. 


Grillable Veggie Burgers from Vegan Richa
I mean, do these just look perfect or what? Veggie burgers can sometimes be tricky to get to hold together for the grill so I love that these are "grillable." The base of these burgers is made of black beans and sunflower seeds. 

These grill-friendly burgers are packed with nutrition from fabulous ingredients like chia, and, well, of course the beets, beans, and quinoa! 


Chickpea Veggie Burgers from The View from Great Island
I'm digging the lighter color and delicate sprouts on these burgers! Chickpeas are such a great source of plant based protein. 

Portobello Eggplant Veggie Burger from Salt and Lavender. I love a good portobello burger and the addition of eggplant sounds fantastic! 



Manly Man Nutty Veggie Burgers from Plant Powered Kitchen. I love that these burgers are packed with hearty nuts, carrots, and zucchini! 


Easy Sweet Potato Veggie Burgers with Avocado from Healthy Happy Life
Avocado and sweet potato is a match made in heaven! 


These veggie burgers are definitely hearty enough for a carnivore! 

That sauce, though! 

Another amazing bold and smoky sauce, but I the patty looks incredible too. I love that the patty has zucchini, bell pepper, and jalapeno! 


Speedy Black Bean Burgers from the No Excuses Detox cookbook via Fried Dandelions
Okay, you had me at speedy. This one is for those busy nights when you want a good, simple burger. Uh, is it bad if I feel like that most nights? 

These sweeties are from the show, The Chew. I love that the base is made of roasted sweet potatoes. Did you know that sweet potatoes are great for glowing skin due to the high beta-carotene content?  

After putting together this round-up of veggie burgers, I, for one am craving a burger big-time. But where to begin?
